The Perception of Pattern: An Advanced Training with Arlyn Zones (For Practitioners and Trainees Only)

The Perception of Pattern: An Advanced Training with Arlyn Zones (For Practitioners and Trainees Only)

  • Lakewood Seward Park Community Club (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

When we talk about a person’s “pattern”…

…how do we construct an image for ourselves?

Do we consider a person’s patterns of movement, as they relate to our inner library of Awareness Through Movement®?  Do we kinesthetically try-on their patterns?

What is it about the way that they move that immediately catches our interest? What sort of movement patterns or skeletal configurations are primary in their actions, and which are absent? And in observing what is and is not there, what can we discover about the gaps in a person’s self-image?

In these 3 days we will explore pattern from a variety of viewpoints and become more confident about the choices we can make in response to what we see and sense from the initial assessment to the finishing touches we offer at the end of the lesson.

We will have ATMs and F.I. practices that start distally and connect through the whole person. We will also start proximally and work our way outward. We will learn to observe the primary hinge points that the person uses in their movement and how to shift them.  There will also be movement “observation” exercises.

We will expand our repertoire of ways to investigate what sort of difference will make the biggest “difference” for our students.

Owner’s Manual Workshop Series with Vicki Robinson: Fall 2024 Series

3 Saturdays: Sept 7th, Oct 5th, Nov 9th 2024

How do we lean into, adapt, expand, and thrive in the midst of chaotic times? The ability to be in today’s challenging world can be a bit like walking a tightrope. We brace, tighten, check out, and often live in overwhelm. Movement goes beyond metaphor and we can thrive even though we are moving through changing times.
All of these are full-body movement lessons that fit different themes.

Prepay all three sessions: $180.
Each individual session: $65.

Sept 7th, 2024: 1 – 3:30 pm
Leaning In:  Finding the ground, and orienting to the environment.
In this workshop we’ll look at ways to sense into the ground, connect into our whole selves as well as the world around us. Find greater balance and ability to be present.

Oct 5th, 2024: 1 – 3:30pm
Adapting: Freedom to move in any direction without preparation.
Agency refers to the freedom of making choices; this is essential for our nervous systems to be able to move through challenges. In this workshop we look at how we have choice in how we move through life.

Nov 9th, 2024: 1 - 3:30pm
Expanding: Through breath we claim all of our ‘real estate.’
Our breath can sometimes halt, become shallow or rapid …our nervous system reflects a need to get ready to run or hide. We’ll look at ways of sensing breath from head to toe.

Space is limited, please sign up early to reserve your spot.

Each session focuses on a movement theme and includes at least two movement lessons. These lessons will include lessons that are done lying on mats on the ground, as well as possibly seated and standing. Please contact Vicki if you have concerns about these positions.

Single session:  $55 | $50 early bird by Jan 15, 2024

Space is limited to 12 participants. Sign up here!

Session 1: Folding (flexion) with your whole self
Feb 10, 2024, 1 - 3 pm
Flexion is essential to all movement.
Folding well means utilizing the larger joints to support a healthy and balanced spine and strong and mobile hip joints.

Flexion is considered the most primal and self-protective of movements. Folding well is essential for all movement, and our culture (of chairs) tends to bias our movement postures, often leading to low back and neck issues. We’ll look at movement lessons that support suppleness in the spine, pelvis and hip joints.

Session 2: Lengthening (extension) with your whole self
Feb 17, 2024, 1 - 3 pm
Finding our whole length is essential to our biped species.
We’ll explore optimal movement for extension, balance and healthy use of all the joints.

Many of us are admonished to ‘straighten our spines’, and walk upright. In this lesson we’ll explore the curvatures of the spine, our pelvis and eyes to find efficient and optimal length.

Session 3: Turning (rotation) with your whole self
Feb 24, 2024, 1 - 3 pm
How do you turn around yourself with the greatest ease, balance, full body awareness?
We’ll look at the important connections all the way from the eyes all the way down to your feet and toes.

The ability to turn around ourselves with ease is important for good health, and this supports a balanced nervous system when we can orient to the environment for cues of safety. From the feet up to the eyes, turning is a whole body event.

Session 4: Breathing (respiration) with your whole self
March 2, 2024, 1 - 3 pm
One of the best things we can do for ourselves is sense into the full capacity of our breath.
As we expand our awareness and intention into our full anatomy, we can sense breath far beyond the abdomen and chest.

In this class we’ll build on the previous three sessions to explore breathing in an entirely differently way. Most of us utilize a small percentage of our breathing capacity; this session will expand your breathing horizons.
